[Comic] Can DNA slop be possible?

If DNA slop ever becomes a reality, the surprisingly important technology might not be how to make engineered organisms well, but how to make sure they can't survive in the wild.

Synthetic biology already has biological containment systems designed to prevent engineered organisms from surviving outside controlled conditions. For example, organisms can be engineered to depend on a specific substance to survive, or equipped with "kill switches" that cause them to die when they leave a particular environment.

But even these aren't perfect delete buttons.

Mutations can sometimes allow organisms to bypass these safeguards and survive. That's why recent research has been moving toward combining multiple containment mechanisms and reducing the probability of escape itself.
